ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Most graduate students think that “dissertating” is a miserable, solitary process. It is
definitely not. (Well, it might sometimes be a little miserable but never solitary.)
I feel indebted to the members of my committee. First, I want to thank Scott Frickel.
Scott has been my mentor since I have started the program, and without his excellent,
unwavering support and guidance none of this would have been possible. I am grateful for the
knowledge, skills, and opportunities he gave me. Scott was always there when I needed advice,
listened to me patiently, and guided me when I felt stuck. This study would not have been
possible without him, and I will be forever grateful.
In my first year at WSU, I was in another graduate program, and took Gregory Hook’s
theory class. When I approached him and told my intentions of switching to sociology, he was
incredibly supportive and helped me through the whole bumpy process and wrote a
recommendation letter. Without him, I would not be a part of this great program. Furthermore,
Greg’s incredible expertise and knowledge always helped me to hone my ideas and refine my
research. Greg has a unique ability to approach a subject from multiple complex angles, and he
can deliver even the most devastating critique with a great sense of humor (and then you realize
his critiques are never devastating).
I also want to express my gratitude another of my committee members, Erik Johnson.
Erik has this amazing skill to dissect even the most difficult concepts and teach them in a simple
manner. He generously devoted his time and support to me and always opened his door when I
sought help.
Finally, I would like to thank Thomas Rotolo. Tom always gave excellent statistical,
methodological, and theoretical advice and answered every one of my long, boring, and
